TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Cina punya tembok besar Cina sebagai benteng kuno terpanjang di dunia. Tapi benteng terluas di dunia, ada di Indonesia. Tepatnya di kota Baubau, Buton.
Adalah benteng Keraron Buton atau yang sering disebut juga benteng Wolio. Benteng ini memiliki luas sekitar 23,3 hektare. Tak heran, Museum Rekor Dunia Indonesia (MURI) bersama Guinness Book of World Record pada September 2006 menobatkan Benteng Wolio sebagai bangunan pertahanan terluas di dunia.
“Jika masyarakat dunia mengenal ada Tembok Raksasa di Cina atau The Great Wall of China, kita di Indonesia, khususnya di Baubau ini punya benteng terpanjang yang juga harus diketahui dunia,” kata Wali Kota Baubau AS Tamrin.
Ia mengatakan bahwa kini Pemerintah Kota Baubau sedang berupaya menjadikan Benteng Keraton Buton sebagai situs warisan dunia. “Tentu tak mudah, namun upaya sedang dan terus dilakukan sehingga ikhtiar Benteng Keraton Buton sebagai situs warisan dunia dapat diwujudkan dengan sinergi bersama,” ujarnya.
Saat ini, benteng tersebut telah ditetapkan sebagai cagar budaya nasional oleh Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan sejak 2003.
Dari laman indonesia.go.id, Benteng Keraton Wolio di Kelurahan Melai, Kecamatan Betoambari mulai dibangun pada masa Sultan Buton III La Sangaji yang bergelar Sultan Kaimuddin, yang memerintah Buton pada 1591-1596. Semula, benteng tersebut hanya dibangun dalam bentuk tumpukan batu yang disusun mengelilingi kompleks istana sebagai pagar pembatas antara komplek istana dengan perkampungan masyarakat sekaligus sebagai benteng pertahanan.
Kemudian pada masa pemerintahan La Elangi atau Sultan Dayanu Ikhsanuddin sebagai Sultan Buton IV, benteng berupa tumpukan batu tersebut dijadikan bangunan permanen. Benteng itu selesai dibangun pada pemerintahan Labuke Sultan Gafurul Wadudu pada 1632.
Benteng ini disebut dibangun dari batu gunung dan karang yang direkatkan dengan putih telur memakai campuran pasir dan kapur. Bangunan ini memiliki empat buah boka-boka atau pos pengintai (bastion) di empat penjuru, 12 buah lawa atau pintu gerbang, 16 benteng kecil (baluara), parit dan sistem persenjataan berupa badili atau meriam sepanjang buatan Portugis dan Belanda.
Di dalamnya, terdapat Masigi Ogena atau Masjid Agung, istana sultan (kamali), makam-makam sultan dan pejabat tinggi serta rumah adat malige. Terdapat pula Sulana Tombi, yaitu tiang bendera setinggi 21 meter yang dibangun pada tahun 1712 di masa Sultan Buton Sakiuddin Darul Alam. Tiang bendera terbuat dari kayu jati ini berada di halaman Masjid Agung dan digunakan untuk mengibarkan longa-longa, bendera milik kesultanan berbentuk segitiga.
Di halaman masjid juga terdapat jangkar raksasa yang diambil dari kapal dagang VOC yang karam di perairan Buton pada 1592.
Benteng ini ramai dikunjungi wisatawan donestik dan mancanegara sebelum pandemi. Bahkan pada 2019, jumlah kunjungan wisatawan mancanegara mencapai 6.000 orang yang didominasi dari Eropa.
